Text Modification and Bulk Editing Tools
Some text problems are not spelling problems. A manuscript full of straight quotes, a French translation missing the space before every colon, a client file where every é came back as é — no spell-checker flags any of it, and all of it marks the text as unfinished to anyone who knows what to look for.
These nine tools fix that category of problem. They run in your browser, so nothing you paste is uploaded, logged or stored. No account, no limits, no payment.
Typography and Style
- Typograph Tool — converts straight quotes to curly ones, hyphens to en and em dashes where they belong, and fixes spacing around punctuation. Follows Chicago, AP, APA, MLA or Oxford conventions, which disagree with each other more than most people expect.
- French Typograph Tool — applies French rules instead: guillemets and the non-breaking spaces French requires before
; : ? ! and inside quotation marks. Getting these wrong is the fastest way to make a French translation look machine-made.
- AP Style Title Case — capitalizes titles and headlines by Associated Press title-case rules, including the four-letter cutoff for prepositions that AP shares with APA but not with Chicago or MLA.
- Word Capitalizer — switches text to all caps, all lowercase or initial capitals, with a length threshold so short words such as “a,” “of” and “the” stay lowercase.
Encoding and Inspection
- Mojibake Decoder — repairs text mangled by an encoding mismatch, the
é and ’ family of damage that happens when UTF-8 is read as Latin-1 or Windows-1252.
- User Agent Info — shows what your browser reports about itself: engine, platform, capabilities and supported media formats. Useful for bug reports and compatibility checks.
Counting, Comparing and Bulk Editing
- Word Counter — live word and character counts for the whole text or just your selection, for anyone working to a limit.
- Text Compare — a side-by-side diff of two drafts, matching lines first and then highlighting the individual words that changed within them.
- Add Prefix and Suffix — adds text to the start or end of every line at once: quoting a list into array syntax, commenting out a block, turning slugs into full URLs.
From the Blog
The tools apply rules; the blog explains them, with primary sources cited on every article — official orthography councils, the style guides themselves and the Unicode standard rather than secondhand advice.
